CHAPTER 5. ADVICE FROM A CATERPILLAR

 

�� …at last the Caterpillar took the hookah out of its mouth, and addressed her in a languid, sleepy voice.

 “Who are you?”said the Caterpillar.

 

　イモムシは幼虫なので、タバコをふかしているとは言え、年寄り口調にするのは変かもしれない、と思っていたところ、宮脇孝雄氏の『翻訳家の書斎』第２章�供嵋殘�志望者必読の一冊」に、「（略）原文に見え隠れしている, なんだかよくわからないが, 妙に理屈っぽい変な生き物, というイメージ（略）」とあった。 

『地下』のキャロル自身の挿絵ではまつげがやたら長くて、なんだかアネさんふうにも見える（それ以前に、イモムシではなく蛇に見えるが）。

　幼虫と言っても、たいていの場合、一生のほとんどをその状態で過ごすわけだから、「幼」と呼ばれていても、必ずしも「子」とは言えないだろう。見た目にも「老」を思わせるところがあるし、なにしろ親に育てられたことはなく、生まれた時から自立しているのだ。

 

�◆�Are you content now?”said the Caterpillar.

 “Well, I should like to be a little larger, Sir, if you wouldn't mind,”said Alice:“three inches is such a wretched height to be.”

 “It is a very good height indeed!”said the Caterpillar angrily, rearing itself upright as it spoke (it was exactly three inches high).

 

　アリスが自分の背たけを３インチと言ったのは、ものの例えというわけでなければ、イモムシの大きさなどをを見ての判断だろう。

　だとすれば確かにこれは失礼な発言ではある。

 

��“You are old,”said the youth,“as I mentioned before,

　　And have grown most uncommonly fat;

　Yet you turned a back-somersault in at the door―

　　Pray, what is the reason of that?”

 

　back-somersault は語呂の関係で「バク転」にしたが、そういう言い方なら本当は「バク宙」だろう。

 

�ぁ�It matters a good deal to me,”said Alice hastily;“but I'm not looking for eggs, as it happens; and, if I was, I shouldn't want yours: I don't like them raw.”

 

　テレビでやっていたが、ヨーロッパの人に言わせると、生卵を食べるのは蛇と日本人ぐらい、なのだとか。中国でも食べないそうだ。本当だろうか。

　マヨネーズには使いますけどね、とも言っていたが、どうやらサルモネラ菌中毒の心配があるらしい。

「え、ロッキーは？」と思ったのは私だけではないだろう。

 

�� After a while she remembered that she still held the pieces of mushroom in her hands, and she set to work very carefully, nibbling first at one and then at the other, and growing sometimes taller and sometimes shorter, until she had succeeded in bringing herself down to her usual height.

 

　very carefully と言っている割に何度か行き過ぎているようで、あまり言葉通りの感じがしないが……。

 

�Α�Whoever lives there,”thought Alice,“it'll never do to come upon them this size: why, I should frighten them out of their wits!”

 

　frighten them out of their wits は「びっくり仰天させる」の意だが、そうならないようにとのアリスの気遣いにもかかわらず、あるいはそんなことを言ったものだから、次章で登場するコックは特に out of her wits（正気の外）であるようだ。キャロルの予告（伏線）ともジョークともとれる（と思う）。
