CHAPTER 11. WHO STOLE THE TARTS?

 

�� マザー・グースっぽい章題だと思う。もっとも、似たものとしてパッと思いつくのは Who killed Cock Robin? とか、What are little boys made of? ぐらいだが。

　で、実際起訴状がマザー・グースになっている。

 

�� The King and Queen of Hearts were seated on their throne when they arrived, with a great crowd assembled about them―all sorts of little birds and beasts, as well as the whole pack of cards:

 

　法廷にトランプ全部ということは、王族や貴族、兵士はもとより、庭師（例の三人も含め）や子供たちまでいることになるが。

 

�� But there seemed to be no chance of this; so she began looking at everything about her to pass away the time.

 

　die の婉曲表現としての pass away というのがあるが、ここでは特に何かを暗示しているわけではないだろう。むしろ７章との兼ね合いから kill time という表現は使えなかったろうと思う。

 

�� Alice had never been in a court of justice before, but she had read about them in books, and she was quite pleased to find that she knew the name of nearly everything there.

 

　アリスが読んだいくつかの本というのはどんなものだろう。裁判所について書かれているということだが。

 

�ァ�They're putting down their names,”the Gryphon whispered in reply,“for fear they should forget them before the end of the trial.”

 

　グリフォンの説明では馬鹿げて聞こえるが、実際12章ではこれが役に立ったようだ。

　自分の名前ぐらいさっと書けそうなものだが、まさか自分以外の陪審員全員の名前も書いていたわけではないだろう。その方がよけいにナンセンスではあるが。

 

�� …so, after hunting all about for it, he was obliged to write with one finger for the rest of the day; and this was of very little use, as it left no mark on the slate.

 

　very little use というのはほぼ no use のようなものらしいが、12章後半、裁判も終わり近くになってあることが起こり、to write with one finger もちょっと役に立つようになるので no use とはしなかったのかもしれない。

 

��“The Queen of Hearts, she made some tarts,

　　All on a summer day:

　…

 

　起訴状はまるまるマザー・グースの一節だが、フシギの国の Queen of Hearts は実際に tarts を作ったのだろうか。

　そのような人物にはあまり思えないが、実際に作っていたのだとしたら、案外家庭なところがあるのかもしれない。

 

�─�Fourteenth of March, I think it was,”he said.

 “Fifteenth,”said the March Hare.

 “Sixteenth,”said the Dormouse.

 “Write that down,”the King said to the jury; and the jury eagerly wrote down all three dates on their slates, and then added them up, and reduced the answer to shillings and pence.

 

　ここは単なるナンセンスと思っていたが、write down が「値下げする」という意味で使われることもあると言うことは、陪審員たちは王様が「値下げしろ」と言ったと解して三つを合計し、シリングとペンスに reduce（この場合は普通「換算する」の意だが、「減らす」の意もある）したというジョークだろうか。

　でも、その前に陪審員たちが wrote down したとあるから違うかな。

 

�� All this time the Queen had never left off staring at the Hatter, and, just as the Dormouse crossed the court, she said to one of the officers of the court,“Bring me the list of the singers in the last concert!”

 

　the officers of the court はトランプの一員だろうか。

　だとすると８章の行列の描写から、２、５、７と絵札を除いたスペードのうちの誰かか。

　兵士や他のジャックの兼任、あるいは動物ということはあるだろうか。

 

��“I'm a poor man, your Majesty,”the Hatter began, in a trembling voice,“and I hadn't begun my tea―not above a week or so―and what with the bread-and-butter getting so thin―and the twinkling of the tea―”

 

　帽子屋の証言の and I hadn't begun my tea―not above aweek or so は、プロジェクト・グーテンベルク版も含めて現在の版ではこの通りだが、初版（復刻本で確認）では and I hadn't but just begun my tea――not above a week or so となっていた。

「お茶を始めたばかりだった」から「お茶を始めていなかった」に変わっているわけだ。

　いつのことを言っているのかについて訳が分かれている。

　ほとんどのものは「この裁判に呼び立てられた時」のこととしていて、「お茶を始めて一週間経っていない」というように訳されている。

　これを間違いとしているのが石川澄子氏で、「三月半ばから五月四日までの間のどこか」として、「一週間以上もお茶を始めかねましてございます」と訳している。

　氏の『鏡の国のアリス　ルイス・キャロル　人と作品』（八紘社印刷出版局）から引用すると、

「英語では、今いった否定文のいい足りないところを補足してもう一度いう場合、二度目の否定文は既知の部分を省略して否定詞だけを残し、そのあとに新に補足する部分をいい添えます」

と言うことで、つまり「始めてから一週間経っていなかった」のではなくて、「一週間以上始めていなかった」と言っているということだ。そして、

「三月半ばから五月四日までの間のどこかで一週間、あるいはそれ以上の間、お茶を始めなかったことを過去完了形でいっています。（略）帽子屋がお茶の時間に止った時計に殉じてぶっ続けにお茶を続けているうちに物資欠乏を来して、お八つのない日々があったと大の男がべそをかいているおかしさ（略）」

と説明している。

　私は発言のつながりを考えると、帽子屋はその前に自分が証言した「お茶を始めた日（３月半ば）」のことを言っているのではないか思うのだが、どうだろう。

「一週間以上始めなかった」つまり音楽会のあとはずっとお茶の時間だったが、貧乏ゆえに（あるいはその気になれなかった？）それまで一週間ぐらいは好きなお茶も始めていなかった、という意味ではないかと、女王様が音楽会での帽子屋の失態を思い出しそうなので、おびえた帽子屋がつい、言い訳がましいことを言ったのではないかと思うのだが。

　ところでテニエルのイラストによるお茶会のシーンでは、テーブルの状態は一、二か月前どころか一週間前ですらなく、ついさっきお茶を始めたばかりに見える。そうすると法廷での帽子屋の発言以前に、お茶会の席で言ったことにも信憑性というか、まともに聞くべき部分があるのかどうかという疑問も湧いてくるのだが、どう捉えるのが最も妥当だろう。

 

��“I'm a poor man,”the Hatter went on,“and most things twinkled after that―only the March Hare said―”

 “I didn't!”the March hare interrupted in a great hurry.

 “You did!”said the Hatter.

 “I deny it!”said the March Hare.

 “He denies it”said the King:“leave out that part.”

 “Well, at any rate, the Dormouse said―”…

 

　王様のセリフ leave that part は、帽子屋に向かって「省け」と言ったのか、陪審員に向かって「削除しろ」と言ったのか、どっちだろう。

　映画『アリス　不思議の国の大冒険』などでは後者のように描かれているが、原文には陪審員がどうしたといったことが書かれていないし、帽子屋の Well,… というセリフが続けられているので、後者の方ではないかと思っているのだが。

 

��“After that,”continued the Hatter,“I cut some more bread-and-butter―”

 

　帽子屋の証言の cut は「減らした」じゃないかな。

 

�� The next witness was the Duchess's cook. She carried the pepper-box in her hand,…

 

　pepper-box は６章の挿絵でコックが左手に持っているものだろう。ミルにはなっていないのかな。

 

�� The King looked anxiously at the White Rabbit, who said, in a low voice,“Your Majesty must cross-examine this witness.”

 “Well, if I must, I must,”the King said with a melancholy air, and, after folding his arms and frowning at the cook till his eyes were nearly out of sight, he said, in a deep voice,“What are tarts made of?”

　[…]

 “Never mind!”said the King, with an air of great relief.“Call the next witness.” And he added in an under-tone to the Queen,“Really, my dear, you must cross-examine the next witness. It quite makes my forehead ache!”

 

　王様がコックをにらむのは cross-examine（反対尋問）を「不機嫌な（怒っている）尋問」と解したというジョークだろう。

　脇朋子氏は「反対」を強調して訳に反映させていた。

　また、通常の尋問もないうちに、いきなり「反対」尋問を行うというナンセンスでもあるようだ。
