　壺齋散人氏によると、go round the mulberry bush というのは本来、桑畑をまわって桑の実を採る仕事のことを指しているそうで、一週間の仕事を歌ったものがおおもとかもしれません。

　ほかにも「歯をみがく」とか「髪をとかす」とか、いろいろに歌われていて、輪になって回って踊ったり、それぞれの振りまねをしたりして遊ぶようです。
