原詩の‘With a rowley, powley, gammon and spinach,’というところ、gammon は豚の燻製肉、spinach はホウレンソウ、powley は特に意味のない語のようですが、元々はなかったフレーズということで、単に調子を良くしているだけなんでしょうね。 この歌は詩もメロディーもさまざまなものがあって、ボブ・ディラン (Bob Dylan) や、ピート・シーガー (Pete Seeger) もカバーしているのだとか。
